From the start to the top of Croix de Fer was about 41 kms with just under 2000 metres climb – and a 6 kilometre descent in the middle. My plan was to descend the 2.5 kilometres to Col du Glandon, then descend it. The summit has wide open views of mountains in all directions. For mountain bikers: behind the parking at Col de la Croix de Fer itself is an old, unpaved road that goes far, far higher up to two beautiful dams/lakes and even as far as the St-Sorlin Glacier.

It gets easier near the top as the route passes the beautiful Lac de Grand Maison. The views get great. Just after the three tunnels is a right turn signed as “St-Sorlin-d’Arves & Panoramique” that passes above the main route.
